Sunday morning and you know the drill.. The previous night you had wined and dined your good lady and treated her to a night out. You complimented her on her hair and what she was wearing, you even noticed her new hair style!! Next up you gave her the option to choose where to eat.. Ringing any bells yet? Now the clever ones of us stayed in, cheap box of chocolates that had just passed the sell by date and spent the evening cuddled watching X Factor or some other dribble whilst she got ripped phoning some premium line voting scam from her mobile. This meant maximum dollars in your personal, private and secret unshared bank account with the bonus of extra recovery time and rest for the Sunday ride the next day! Arriving at said riding venue after consuming whilst driving I hasten to add, the only palatable option on Macky D's menu, the "Sausage and Egg McMuffin" with ketchup. You are now in the middle of deepest Wales or Scotland and already the game of "One up man-ship" has already kicked off. This isn’t like Manchester United's car park where it's all about the motor you drive, oh no.. Hell, driving a Porsche would probably get you a slating, you’d be walking a lot prouder, and taller with your chin up and chest out with a set of keys for either Merc Vito or a VW Transporter half kitted out with a few essentials such as a rear door that opens up for shelter from the elements. Note to self: Never buy a van with two conventional doors.. Real brownie points and status are earned here by the quality and cleanliness of your ride and what gear you are donning. Your sixth sense kicks in as you sense your riding buddies just feet away behind you checking out your bike for any new shiny parts. Last month you'd upgraded to SRAM X9 and of course one of the crew the following week went one or more better and dropped on XO in what you still believe as personal and vindictive attack! All week as the e-mails bounced back and forth between every ones inboxes regards today's venue and chosen route. You'd been dieing to spill the beans yet somehow you managed to seal your lips and restrain your fingers from sending any attachments regards the bomb you were about to drop. You pop your head in the boot and place on your lid and turn around, "BOOM".. The crowd stands back in amazement and sure envy. Everyone has seen the likes of Shaun Palmers or Steve Peat's custom Troy Lee personalised spray jobs, in downhill you isn't anyone unless you have a new helmet and custom spray job every year.. For far too long the new breed of serious weekend warrior relied on a conventional XC lid that was light and fitted the original purpose of keeping your bounce protected and cool. The only problem was they all looked roughly the same and you looked like a Roller Bladder in it! Today and tomorrow bike technology is progressing as are the technical and testing tracks that we ride, this means our skills are increasing as are the risks we are taking. Everyone is wising up to the dangers, protected knees and elbows are common place now as are piss pot skater style lids that originated from the original founder and real deal, Protect, www.pro-tec.net. Your old XC lid was almost impossible to customise with all those large open vents, with these style helmets the great news is the large comprehensive outer hardened surface area offers an ideal canvas to get sprayed and customised with whatever design you can draw up and budget for. This one here is a combination of the Maltese Cross as used by the legendary skateboard truck company Independent and the St Georges Cross. The Pearlescent White base sparkles in all light to give that extra P-Daddy or whatever he is called these days baling factor. Just note the SRAM XO graphics on the peak are actually stickers. To keep up with the Jones's or your so called "Mates" then drop the bomb on them first and get your lid done. The current number one choice for the downhill is Al Doyle from MFX Air Art. Post your new pride and joy up to sunny Scotland to Big Al and a week or two later you will be driving smugly that Sunday morning to rendezvous with your riding mates. Cost? Well that all depends on what design you want doesn't it and also how far you are willing to go to keep that personal bank account secret from her? This helmet here is a Pro-Tec Ace Dig available from UK Distributors Pal gap UK and retails for around £39.99. Listed as urban assault tested and riot police approved! The Ace Dig can be found donned by the Worlds best BMX dirt jumpers as well as those in the know on the Free ride and Enduro tracks out there.
